Janet Gardner Gig Review

When arriving in Edinburgh I made my way towards Bannerman's bar where the gig was to take place. I arrived around 5:30pm making sure I knew where the gig was located. I walked into Bannerman's bar and headed to the venue where the bands would be playing to find both bands setting up their equipment in a cavern looking hall.

The hall was covered in brickwork with an arch in the middle, looking old but very cool. Housing around 100-200 people the hall is relatively small. Upon entering the room I found Janet Gardner and husband Justin James talking to the sound engineer about an American drum tech equipment which in turn would end up blowing up upon being plugged in and delaying the concert as the band had to find a replacement quickly. I went for dinner and came back around 6:30 for a drink and to wait for the concert to start. As the bands arrived I noticed Tim chambers the bassist for Sister shotgun who I had met at a concert in Glasgow when he was filling in for Scarlett Riot Bassist martin Sheppard, we shook hands and spoke for a minute where he told me they were running a little late and Sister shotgun had yet to do their soundcheck. He told me he was looking forward to playing.

At roughly 8:20pm Sister shotgun took the stage and I managed to get to the front row of the hall. As they started they burst out with the song no hope which has only ever been released as a single and is one of my favorites from Sister Shotgun. A great song to kick off the concert with, and after that came miss fortune taking from their debut EP Devour. For the love of hate and fragments followed which do not appear on their EP. The band is Chloe Ozwell on vocals, Niall Wills on Guitar, Tim chambers on Bass, Dave Harvey on Drums and introducing Benji Tatlock on Guitar. Benji recently joined the band after Rob Hayes left for personnel reasons and Benji did a great job learning rhythmn and lead guitars for the band in a short time. The next three songs where taking from the Devour EP with From the Ashes, Overcome and finishing with the latest single Silhouettes.

The gig was great to experience, the sound was brilliant, all instruments and vocals could be heard evenly, not too loud to be buzzing in your head the next morning. After they had played they went to their merchandise stand at the back of the hall to talk to the fans and sign autographs. The band was really approachable and very nice to talk to and take pictures with. After a short breather and a cool down period Janet Gardner and her band consisting of husband Justin James on Guitar. Janet played most songs from her debut album with the exception of a cover of Kiss Love Gun sung by the bassist. I would say 2 of the best tracks from her new album are Rat Hole and Candle writing about her late father. The band where really good and the sound quality was excellent. They played for roughly an hour and rocked Bannerman's. After the show the band stayed for autographs and pictures and spoke to the fans for a good while. I spoke to both bands for another while before heading home.
