Perpetua Interview

1.    Who are your influences?
We all have a lot of varying influences but most of them boil down the riffy bands like Gojira, early Machine Head and Metallica, Sylosis etc. We just love bands with BIG riffs. That being said we love some of the cheesiest 80s/ 90s pop and rock as well but that doesn’t really make it’s way into our songwriting thankfully!
2. You recently announced that you're supporting Bleed From Within at Glasgow, how do you feel about this opportunity?
This is our second time playing with them. We put our name in for it a while back and it all got approved and we’re really happy about it. Over the years we’ve become a bit friendlier with the BFW guys so I think they were pretty happy to have us on the bill too which is much better for us. Being friends with them just makes everything so much easier on the day of the show really.
Being Scottish ourselves, we’re lucky that we’ve got a good fanbase here already so it makes it more special for us to be able showcase our new material on a bigger stage in our home country.
3. How would you describe your band to others?
We often describe our songs as big filthy riffs. I think we have a really good mixture of groove and fast riffs that make us accessible to a wider metal audience without compromising our songwriting to appeal to a certain audience. If you don’t like us then so be it, we appreciate you checking it out! Luckily for us we’ve not really had anyone who hasn’t liked our newer material yet!
4. What sets you apart from others?
As mentioned before, we have a really good mix of thrash and groove with big riffs. We don’t compromise on vocals and guitar solos. If certain songs call for some clean vocals then we’ll add them in. Likewise with guitar solos, Kieran is one of the best lead guitarists I’ve ever seen but not every song needs a solo and that’s what makes this band work well and sets us apart. Knowing when to turn it up and dial it back on certain songs and having that heaviness that appeals to a wider metal audience.
5. This question is for vocalist Jack, what's your tips for screaming?
Make sure you drink plenty water and warm up otherwise your throat is done for!
6. You won the award for 'Best metal band' in 2016, how do you all feel about that?
At the time we were rather surprised by it as we were still finding our feet at the time and feel we are much more deserving of it now compared to then. We are still incredibly grateful for it as it’s a really cool accolade to have.
7. Are you working on any new music at the moment?
Without giving too much away, yes! We are always working on new music. Whether or not it makes the cut is up to us in the end but luckily there hasn’t been a lot of songs that have been scrapped.
8. What's the best venue you've performed at?
We played the Liquid Rooms in Edinburgh with Kindred last year which was awesome. We have a feeling St Luke’s in Glasgow with Bleed From Within will top that considering it’s an old cathedral!
We’re also playing Heavy Scotland Fest with Carcass in September at The Corn Exchange in Edinburgh which will be wild so maybe that will top St Luke’s. We’ll see!
When it comes down to it though, we absolutely love playing Opium in Edinburgh. The atmosphere is always unbelievable and people absolutely go mental at our shows there which is awesome.
9. How did you come up with your band logo?
Our guitarist Andy actually came up with the main concept. We wanted something simple that we could use as a brand almost so that people could instantly recognise it as ours. We then got in touch with Luciferium War Graphics who then constructed the final emblem and then gave us a logo with the full name included as well.
10. To finish it off, can you tell us why people should check you out?

People should always be checking out new music so that’s one reason, but for us in particular, we’ve spent the past couple years really refining our sound and putting every minute and every penny, ounce of blood and sweat into this band just so we can present our craft in front of new audiences. Our music is big and heavy and our lyrics carry meaning and can be easily related to. We’ve also had nothing but compliments on our live shows and personally I feel that as a band we are very tight and technically proficient in our craft. We are very humble and appreciate absolutely every opportunity that we get and always take the time to talk to fans and hang out with everyone, a courtesy some bands seem to lack these days.
